Un brillant architecte, Jason Kemp, récemment paralysé à la suite d'un accident de voiture, passe ses journées à épier ses voisins. Il finit par connaître toutes leurs habitudes. Mais un jour, il est témoin d'une violente dispute entre Julian Thorpe, sculpteur de talent, et sa femme Ilene, qui disparaît brutalement. Jason soupçonne un meurtre et en parle à sa collègue de travail, Claudia, ainsi qu'au détective Moore. Mais ce dernier est sceptique, d'autant plus qu'Ilene réapparaît peu après.
