Un road train roule sur une route de l'outback sur fond de crépuscule miraculeux. À la faveur d'une halte, son conducteur découvre le cadavre d'une jeune aborigène égorgée abandonnée sous une canalisation. Les policiers blancs s'en lavent les mains et confient l'enquête à Jay Swan, un policier du cru, revenu depuis peu dans sa ville. Peu à peu, Jay Swan découvre le chant du cygne de sa petite cité corrompue par la drogue et la prostitution. Le jeune policier l'ayant précédé a trouvé la mort en voulant démêler l'écheveau.
