Julia et Georg n’arrivent pas à concevoir et font appel au Dr Vilfort, spécialiste de la fertilité, qui officie dans sa clinique isolée dans la montagne. Il est optimiste : Julia engendrera, grâce à son procédé expérimental. Neuf mois plus tard, Julia est en salle de naissance. À peine né, le bébé lui est retiré. Le Dr Vilfort explique que l'enfant a manqué d'oxygène et a été conduit d'urgence en soins intensifs à l'hôpital. Il les dissuade avec insistance d'aller le voir.
